He was raised in a working-class Italian-American family and attended Brooklyn College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1954. He then went on to earn his master’s degree in 1955 and his Ph.D. in 1959, both from Yale University. In 1971, Zimbardo accepted a tenured position as professor of psychology at Stanford University. With a government grant from the U.S. Office of Naval Research, he conducted the Stanford prison study in which male college students were selected (from an applicant pool of 75).
